Fano is the digital revival of the italic designed by the Bolognese Francesco Griffo and first published in 1503. The typeface was created during the Expert Class in Type Design (ECTD) as a personal research project on the italics designed by Griffo from the 16th century onwards. Among the various fonts by Griffo, the Fano italic is considered by Italian historians to be one of the archetypes for all italic models designed thereafter.
It is a complex and interesting model, rich in variations and alternative characters, inspired by the irregularity of the chancery handwriting of Bartolomeo Sanvito, from which it draws inspiration. The Fano typeface stems from the curiosity to discover the Italian origins of the italic and to interpret, with a digital revival, one of Francesco Griffo's most interesting characters.
