The research project wants to investigate the relationship between letters and images, the designers approach to the expressive typography and the possible use of artificial intelligence in this experimental practice of the shape regarding the realization of the lettering.
Thesis is split into two volumes. The first one contains a historical research of the type design that starts from meaning and origins of the ancients scripture to artistic avant-garde of the nineteenth century and schools of thought of the modern graphic design. The typographic archive analyzes the contemporary lettering scene, some designers were also interviewed about their point of view on the typography.
The second volume proposes an experimental approach to lettering design through the use of the AI Midjourney software. All letters “A”, shapes and geometric patterns were combined thanks to the “blend” command, giving rise to new letter shapes in a very short time period. The project aims is to understand how it could be used in the lettering design field and to take to the extreme the legibility limit.
